Easy Rock Painting with Toddlers

Little hands painting a rock yellow
Easy Rock Painting with Toddlers.

Have you seen those adorable painted rocks on social media or out and about? My girls and I have. We have loved going for walks in our neighborhood and seeing them. The girls squeal with delight when they find one. It is equally entertaining watching them hide them. Finding these little treasures has brought so much joy to our family over the past few months. The girls ask to go for walks and love showing us what they find.

I decided to try painting rocks with the girls when I noticed we were having a harder time finding them in our area. I did a quick search on Pinterest for directions and ideas. Much to my surprise there was a lot that goes into painting rocks. Way more than I imagined. Some fill cracks and holes with a filler, and some prime them. If I was going to keep my girls interested I had to simplify the process a lot. My goal was to have fun painting rocks with my girls. Below you will find the process I used to paint/decorate rocks with my littles.

  1. Wash rocks with water and let air dry. (We did this the day before in their water table.)

  2. Paint rocks and let air dry.

  3. Use permanent markers to color on rocks.

  4. Paint rocks with Modge Podge and let dry.

  5. Hide rocks in neighborhood.

  6. Repeat :-)

Yes I did give my girls permanent markers. I gave each one and made sure they only ever had one. They got some marker on their hands but minimal and they had so much fun. Stella, my 3 year old loved it the most. She sat at her table for a good hour coloring and talking. She loved looking at the Pinterest board I created and trying out new designs. She also loved seeing what I was doing and how I was decorating the rocks. Over all it was a great experience and one I will willingly do again.
